2008 Black History Month

African-American Educators Proclamation

    At the February 25th Valley City Council meeting, Mayor Arnold Leak presented a proclamation honoring 15 African-American Educators of Chambers County. The proclamation read:

    "In recognition of Black History Month with sincere appreciation of their many past accomplishments and contributions to the education of hundreds, dedicating countless hours to the profession of teaching in a time of difficulty, often without adequate materials and support. These educators hailed from different geographic locations, however their hearts were always in the same place, as they found ways to serve others, empowering many to attain life achievements and great successes, calling Valley as their home."

 

    The educators honored were:

  • Mrs. Catherine Crook
  • Mr. M. E. Crook
  • Mr. Arthur Dunn, Jr.
  • Ms. Sylvia Garrett
  • Mrs. Pearlie Gibson
  • Ms. Jo Frances House
  • Mr. Wilbur J. Jackson
  • Mr. Dudley Kelly
  • Mr. Thomas McAlpine
  • Mrs. Dorothy Pole
  • Ms. Mary Lois Roberts
  • Mrs. Emma A. Walker


State Representative DuWayne Bridges presented City Council members Dr. Elizabeth Lyons and Charlene Atkinson with prints of Rosa Parks and the Dexter Baptist Church in recognition of their work on the City Council and on the annual Black History Month commemoration.
