I placed a message about a year ago and forgot to make some comments regarding my relationship to Riverview. I lived in Riverview and Langdale in the late 40s and early 50s. I was born in 1944. I do remember the little white kindergarten where I went when I was 4-5 years old. It was wonderful! If you should remember my name (my given name is Alberdeane, but most people called me Abby), please leave a note here. I would love to read it! My family moved to CA when I was 7 years old, around 1952 and that is where I grew up, but made many trips back to AL. I really miss those times, as we had so much fun visiting. My Aunt Annie Love and Uncle Roselle Goggans lived in the big white house on River Road.
I posted a message a year or so ago and was just re-reading it, noting that I had not mentioned that I lived in Riverview and Langdale from 1948 - 1951. I just looked at the book, Riverview,"My Home Town" and it brought back old memories. My Aunt Annie Love and Uncle Roselle Goggans lived in the big white house in Riverdale and I did spend many happy days visiting with them and my cousins, Zella, Thalia and Neva Andrews. I loved the picture of the Old Riverview Kindergarten whch I attended in the late 40's when I was 4 or 5 years old. I still have a photo of my 5th birthday party which was held in the kindergarten! Just love all this... My family moved to CA when I was about 7 years old. I would love to hear from anyone who also went to school here.
My Mother and Father went to and guaduated from Valley High School. I was born in Langdale, in 1951, and lived in the Valley. I grew up going to the Valley Baptish Church. And I remember the drug store that was near by that had the best shakes, and a ball field out back, down the steps. The summers were great, going to the back water, water sking everyday and staying all summer. Even tho I haven't been back for a few years, it will always be home to me. I can still see the stores, remembering back in the early 60's, the hardware store that used to sell fallout shelters that were to be buried in the ground. Still think I saw one the last time I drove by. My grandfather used to put the boat in at the Willis place on the back water, have seen that place changed, remember seeing them as that were building the dance floor over the water years back. I could go on and on about the times I had at the Valley. Now I live in Dayton, Ohio, and work at Wright-Patterson AFB. ROLL TIDE ROLL
Hello, just a note to say I still call Valley (Riverview) my hometown. It will always be the place I cherish and hold dear to my heart. Those were the good ole days of youth. Some of my family still lives there, and everyonce in a while I do get back. Thanks for all the memories I have. Most of the people I grew up with, and Moms and Dads are not there anymore, but they were just honest hard working people. We were considered poor by the worlds standards, but we were RICH in ways the world did not and still do not understand. Thanks to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
I was born in my grandparents home in 1946 on what used to be Georgia Avenue. I have many memories from Shawmutt; I attended Shawmutt kindergarten, went to the old theater down on the circle, watched the retirees playing dominoes, drank sodas at the drug store, checked PO box 90 for mail, then walking up the boulevard and climbing the magnolias along the way.My grandparents are buried in Shawmut and Lanett cemeteries and I don't get down there often enough to visit.
Aloha:I lived in Langdale as a child from 1970-75 while my Dad served in Thailand during the Vietnam war. My mother is a Japanese national and I can remember my elementary school teachers teaching my mother English as I went to school with her. Little things such as the merry go round, receiving a toy and a bag of fruit and nuts at the gym during Christmas was always exciting to us. As a young 18 year old I got my first taste of what it was like to work at the service center for West Point Pepperell during the summer of 83. It feels good to come home from time to time and to see friendly faces from a long time ago. As the years pass so have some of the friendly faces I miss so much. Since I have been stationed in Hawaii since 1993 to present, it is difficult to visit as often as I would like. I have 1 year and 10 months left of active naval service. I found this web site to be very useful and informative. Not sure if I'll move back to the Valley but your web site is a valuable tool if I decide to make my transition back to the Valley as a civilian. Aloha and MahaloDCC(SW) Tobi Bledsoe
i lived in the valley for some years, i just recently moved to texas last year. i truly loved the valley and so did my children. it's a wonderful place to live and raise children. everyone welcomes you with such warm southern comfort. i miss the valley dearly.
I am enjoying the City of Valley Website as I was born in Hogansville Ga, not too far from Valley, Alabama. In fact, I spent my early childhood living in Riverview and Langdale. I attended the little old Riverview Kindergarten and the Langdale Primary School until I was about 7 years old. Even though I was very young, I truly do have good memories of it all. My Aunt Anne Love Goggans and cousins, Zella, Thalia & Neva Andrews all lived in Riverview and I spent many wonderful times in the big white house in Riverview with all of them. It was a different time and place then, I am sure, but I did love it all. After moving to CA when I was seven, we made many summer vacation trips to visit our relatives in the area. Thanks for the good work!
I enjoy the city's web site, I look at it several times a week. I would like to see a visual tour of the mill towns when the mills were operating, like pictures made from the Westpointer. Thank you. Doretha Smith Leak
