May 7th City Council Meeting

The Valley City Council held its first regular scheduled meeting of May on Monday, May 7th, 2018, in the Council Chambers at Valley City Hall.

Mayor Leonard Riley called the meeting to order at 6:00PM. The invocation was given by Councilmember Cassie Carlisle and Councilmember Henry Cooper led the Pledge of Allegiance. All members were present.

Prior to official council business the mayor opened a public hearing to discuss FY 2018 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program was held. The city has been awarded a CDBG grant of $500,000 and an Appalachian Region Commission (ARC) grant in the amount of $250,000 with part of the requirement being to hold a public hearing to discuss what the money will be used for.

The May 7th financial audit report for the city was given as follows:

  • Checking account previous balance.................. $6,499,292.26
  • Total deposits all funds............................................ $706,285.51
  • Total expenditures all funds.................................... $497,827.86
  • Total on-hand all funds......................................... $6,761,749.91

During the Mayor’s Communication, the following occurred

  • Mayor Riley called for public hearings at the next council meeting on the following properties:
  • 1500 54th Street
  • 121 Patton Hill
  • 3154 Columbus Road
  • 374 Summerhill Road
  • 135 G.I. Street

The following actions were taken by the city council at the May 7th meeting:

  • Approved the minutes from April 23rd 2018, council meeting
  • Accepted the May 7th financial audit report
  • Approved unanimously the following resolutions on the Consent Agenda
    • Resolution 2018-071R permitting the consumption of alcohol at a wedding event to be held at the Lakeview Property on June 2, 2018
    • Resolution 2018-072R declaring 10 chairs at Valley City Hall as surplus and authorizing City Clerk Kathy Snowden to properly dispose of the surplus furniture
    • Resolution 2018-073R declaring gym equipment at the Valley Community Center as surplus and authorizing Parks and Recreation Director Laurie Blount to properly dispose of the surplus equipment
  • Heard the second reading of Ordinance 2018-10 prohibiting peddling in the City of Valley and passed it unanimously

The mayor made the following announcements:

  • The second council meeting for May would be the 14th due to Memorial Day

The council went into executive session at 6:15PM to discuss real estate negotiations. Council returned from executive session at 6:50PM and adjourned at 6:51PM.
